Send a Book…to Africa...

Pader Orphan Caring Project

I grew up in post war Germany - in those days- there was not the economic miracle of a Germany you see today - then there was simple lack for everything - from coal to heating a room to food.  Life was tough - but one thing I had as a child in those days was books - books to read - books that allowed me to dream to imagine of better days.

African children for the most part do not have that-they have lack - but they also have no books - there is just the dull pain of daily struggle for existence.

In Northern Uganda there is an orphanage called Pader Orphan Caring Project - 300 plus children - some of them former child soldiers that escaped the Lord's Resistance Army and its leader Joseph Kony.  This orphanage was started by a former child soldier - Richard Akena.

It is not much of a place - but it is a place where compassionate love is freely given to children who have lost their parents during the war years in Uganda - or whose parents were taken by AIDS.

Life expectancy in this area is 29 years, while in the capital it is 53 years.  The area simply lacks-after 20 some years of a war in Northern Uganda - it will take generations to heal the wounds in the hearts of the people - especially the children.

Books can be a vital part of that healing process - Uganda as a whole is a non-reading culture - but once you have them there - children will look at them as good friends - a place to find peace - learn to read - become aware of the rest of the world and grow and mature in wisdom and understanding.  Thank you for caring for the children of Africa-jon

How Can I Help?  How can I get a book to Pader Orphan Caring Project in  Uganda?

I was asking myself those same questions.  I am glad that I discovered some answers where you could easily send quality books to Uganda. Literally thousands of children will read what you send.  We will of course cover the books, so they will endure handling by the countless number of children who will enjoy the treasures you are sending.

To begin with:

  • Send books that are appropriate for children from Grade One to Seven.  That is Primary School in Uganda.

  • You can also send books for secondary Students.

  • Try to send hardback books if you can. They last longer and can be easily covered with plastic.

  • They can be used books, but current.

  • You can send more than one, but I recommend you keep the package size reasonable. It makes it easier to get at the Ugandan post office.

Books can be placed into a bubble wrap envelope and sent.  You can also use an Online British bookseller (Africa Bookseller), specializing in a lot of African books. They do ship, but it is a bit more expensive, excellent collection of African orientated books. (Flat rate International rate from any US post office is about 11 dollars...you can fit about 3 paperbacks into package.)
