Day 1:
Leave Kampala at 7 am and head down
the Jinja highway Arrive at Mabira Rainforest, here
have an opportunity to view a magnificent forest with its trees,
plants, mammals, monkeys and birds. It is one of the last
remaining rainforests in the Central area of Uganda. Uganda
is where the West African Rainforests meet East Africa and Mabira
is most magnificent example of the beauty found elsewhere of
the rainforests in Western Uganda.
After a nice long morning
walk we head off to Jinja where we go to the source of the Nile
and see where John Speke discovered what is known today as the
source of the Nile. You can take a boat ride on the Nile
and go right to where Lake Victoria and the Nile meet.
The Source of the Nile
Park is simply lovely and lots of opportunities to take pictures
from flowers to the Nile and its fishermen.
Afterwards it is lunch
at the Sunset Hotel along the Nile where you can have Chinese,
Indian, Continental and Ugandan fare and all the while look
out on the Nile River down to Owen's Dam.
During the afternoon we
will visit downtown Jinja and visit some local craft shops for
Ugandan Souvenirs and view some of the Asian Homes that were
pre-Idi Amin era.
In the late afternoon
we drive off to our accommodations located along the falls on
the Nile. A fabulously hidden jewel with a great dinner
that will delight you. It is owned by a German man who has created
a true Haven, though the name also Harbor in German. Relax to
the sounds of rushing waters, take a walk across the grounds
and rest for the next day of rafting.
You can pick
any other lodging in Jinja from budget to up-market, just click
on the link.
Day 2:
You
can have a leisurely breakfast while looking at the Nile.
Then it is off for the rafting experience, you can choose from
mild to wild, receive some instructions and off you go for your
trip. Lunch on an Island in the Nile and this will be
one of the most fantastic experiences of your life. Remember
that it is not just any River, but the Nile, the longest river
in Africa, flowing south to north.
Refreshments will be enjoyed
after a fantastic day and then back to the "Haven" for a fantastic
dinner with stories to tell. Get an early rest since we
will be leaving at 7 am in the morning for Murchison Falls National
Park.
Day 3: Early Breakfast
and off we go to Murchison Falls National Park, nice scenery
along the way. We stop for lunch in the town of Malindi
and have lunch at the Malindi Hotel. The Malindi Hotel
is the oldest Hotel in Uganda built by the Ugandan Railroad
in 1923 and it has certainly seen many a guests there including
Kathryn Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart who stayed there for the
making of portions of the African Queen. Malindi is also
the place where Ernest Hemingway recovered from injuries in
two airplane mishaps near Murchison Falls. He stayed for
a few days at the Masindi Hospital. After lunch it is
back on the road to Murchison Falls.
We move into the park
and head for the top of Murchison Falls. The ground trembles
as you approach the falls, you can see the Nile 50 meters wide
and then it plunges down through a 7 meter gorge 47 meters downward.
There is an eternal rainbow created by the mist from the falls...you
glance out and see the Nile gently moving toward its destiny,
Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea.
After this most awesome
experience we head for the
accommodation that you have chosen at
Murchison Falls National Park and check in.
Enjoy your dinner, in
some cases overlooking the Nile, listen to the sounds of the
African night
Day 4: Early
Breakfast and off for a morning game drive. See the sun
rise over the savannah and enjoy the lions, antelopes, elephants,
giraffes, Buffaloes, birds and more along the way.
We return for a break
and lunch, enjoy an afternoon break for the. In the afternoon
we go for a boat ride on the Nile and often the highlight of
the trip to Murchison Falls National Park. Enjoy, take
pictures of Hippopotamus, Buffaloes, crocodiles, birds, monkeys,
elephants and of course the fabulous falls themselves.
One interesting note is that Idi Amin himself took a French
News Crew here and pointed out the crocodiles along the way.
You can see the video on Google video, it is worthwhile seeing
.
Back to your lodging for
dinner and rest in the African Wilderness.
Day 5: An
early morning drive at dusk, then breakfast at the lodging and
off we go for our journey, but it is not over yet...we go on
to tracking (trekking) chimpanzees and that will another
fantastic time for you. A walk viewing chimpanzees in
a mahogany forest.
