African Insights Newsletter Blog October 12, 2009 Joseph Kony's Mother's Dying WishNora Anek Oting wanted peace for her people, the Acholis, for her Country, Uganda.August 10th, 2009 at 11:50 pm Nora Anek Oting closed her eyes for the
last time. The hopes she had for Nora Anek Oting was 86 years old, hailed from the Acholi region near the town of Gulu where she had lived with her husband, raised a family that included one of the most infamous people every to have been born in Uganda who poured wrath and war upon his own Acholi people for over 20 years, but since 1996 has been outside of Uganda in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic and South Sudan.
African Grace, is something that is rarely understood by Westerners, how can you take care of the mother who gave her birth of the arch enemy of your government? Joseph Kony had abandoned his mother and his father before his death, abandoned his family. President Museveni actually shamed Kony for abandoning his mother. In 2006, though quite ill, Nora Anek Oting joined a group of Acholi Elders and Church leaders to meet with Joseph Kony in Garamba National park in the Democratic Republic of Congo in order to restart the stalled peace talks in Juba, South Sudan. Joseph Kony had requested to meet his mother. President Museveni sent along a doctor to assist her since she was already quite ill. For the first time in 17 years Joseph Kony and his mother met. Joseph Kony and his mother spent 12 days together in the jungle of Garamba National Park. She appealed to Kony's heart to sign the peace agreement. She reminded Kony, that it was his perceived enemy, President Museveni who had taken of Kony's parents since the son was not able to do so. It is reported that she even scolded him saying, “Your father died and Museveni buried him. Do you want him to bury me too in your absence?” She had come in peace, with a group of peace makers, reminding Kony that his own people, the Acholis wanted peace, that Uganda wanted peace. Joseph Kony who was thankful to President Museveni for sending his mother, assured her that he wanted peace also. Norah Anek Oting returned to Uganda and the peace treaty went unsigned in Juba, South Sudan. Nora Anek Oting is reported to have been a woman of faith in God who believed that her son needed to released from the demonic spirits that had taken hold of his mind and heart. She went into eternity without seeing with her eyes what her heart so dearly wanted....Peace in the region. In her life she questioned as to how she could birth to such a man, may in her death that man, Kony begin on the path he promised his mother, the path of peace. President Museveni is once again burying one of the parents of Joseph Kony, just as he buried his father. Kony's younger brother has asked that Kony to come to the burial of his mother and to follow through on the promise he had made to Uganda...we are waiting ... from Kampala...jon More Information on Joseph Kony, the LRA, and Northern Uganda
