Mountain Gorilla Tracking at Mgahinga Gorilla National Park The Nyakagezi Gorilla Group can be tracked at Mgahinga Gorilla Park and combined with other activities such as Golden Monkey tracking, Volcano climbing, Nature and Wildlife hikes, the Batwa walk, Cave exploration, Birding. Meet the Nyakagezi Gorilla Group - the only resident habituated gorilla group in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Resident might be a bit overstated since this group has bee quite nomadic and moving into Rwanda for a long time and they also have been in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The good news for the visitor to Uganda is that they they have returned to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and gorilla tracking has resumed there. As long they can find source of food here they will remain and it looks that way. The Gorilla Doctor - Doctor Fred, yes there are gorilla doctors who check up on the health of Mountain Gorillas- remove snares and this group has a baby that has had a terrible snare removed from its leg by the Gorilla Doctors and now is doing, having recovered. Snares are still a reality here in Africa - sadly so - even though organizations such as Uganda Wildlife Authority do their best to prevent such harsh and cruel methods. Meet the Nyakagezi Group: There are 9 members
currently to this group
The only fully habituated group in Mgahinga for tourism is Nyakagezi. The group
ranges into Rwanda and DRC frequently and has lost two members to other groups
during interactions in those countries.
Mark (dominant silverback) Inshuti baby was the infant that had a snare removed by the gorilla doctors who make house calls in the wild and restore injured gorillas back to health. Let us know whether you like to meet this group up close. Gorilla Tracking at Mgahinga Gorilla Park: That is one of the most exciting part in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Here as in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest it can be an all day activity. You need long trousers, long sleeved shirt, a hat, boots, a rain jacket, extra sunscreen and a backpack in which you can put your packed lunch and about 2 liters of water for the day. You will meet the trackers and guide and of course the group of participants which is a maximum of 8 participants and off you go in search of the Nyakagezi Group in the foothills of the majestic Volcanoes that are part of Mgahinga Gorilla Park. The trackers know where they left the gorillas the day before and most of them were part of the habituation process so they are known by the Nyakagezi Gorilla group. Enjoy your time with the Gentle Giants of the foothills of the Virungas. Gorilla Groups for Gorilla Tracking in Uganda: Activities at Mgahinga Gorilla Park:
