For a child in a slum, life is simply a dull pain. There are few joys, and yet the children one meets in a slum often still smile in spite of. Most of them do not go to school. Even though school might be free, most children and their parents or guardians cannot afford those other things that go along with going to school such as uniforms, books, transport, even the toilet paper and broom a child must bring to school.
The children that come to the Bugolobi Project are for the most part are not in school . They live in homes where the key word in life is "LACK." Parents of guardians lack income and resources that could send the children to school. After all, if there is one meal that day, one is blessed, because often the children go to sleep that night without..."Lack and Without." Children grow up without much hope to break out of the cycle of poverty, that in many cases is generational. It is our attempt to place every child in a school that gives a meaningful education that equips the child to have a hope filled future. There are government schools and there is a program called Universal Primary Education but even with that the dropout rate for slum children is phenomenal. 68% of the girls drop out and 37% of boys. The teacher student ratio is about 100 pupils per teacher and a quality education is simply nearly unattainable for the child. We have several schools that we work with and the beauty of the schools are that all students receive a sumptuous lunch and the emphasis is on quantity-quality food, since often if the children live at home, that will be their only meal for the day. Most of us would be surprised how normal plates can hold such heaping portions of food. In many cases our children become boarding students if the distance to the home is too great. The main thing is the quality of education for the child. The ability to read, to grow, to become the person that they were created to be The teachers that are in the schools are well-trained
and their standards exceed the government school and in the yearly comparison
testing that take place, the schools where we place our children come out
on top.
If you like to make a difference in educating a child in Uganda, you can do so for a small amount of money per month sponsoring a child. Your help would be most appreciated and you will hear from the child and teacher that you support. The solution to the life that most slum children have is education in a loving environment that nurtures the growth of the children that attend there. Sponsorship is one of the keys of making the kind of quality education available to the children that we work with who were born into slums and for whom it our prayer and hope that they do not remain there but through your help are able to break the yoke of poverty and live a life with purpose and meaning.
