Books about Africa

Books are something one can enjoy - Books on Africa open up a whole new world.

If there are any profits - they go to African kids.

Below you will find some of the books I enjoy from or about Africa.  If you do not find what you are looking for, try a search on Amazon.com below.  Thank you...jon

The Shadow of the Sun  This is a brand new book by Ryszard Kapuscinski, a Polish journalist who spent years in Africa.  He portrays the people of Africa from the leaders to the person in the countryside with words that paint vivid images in the minds of the reader.  It covers the history and present situation in Africa from Rwanda to Sudan.  You will feel, sense, see and smell the sights and sounds of the heart of Africa, its people.  On my list of books about Africa, this is a 10.

We Wish to Inform You That Tomorrow We will be killed with our Families      Philip Gourevitch takes you to Rwanda to hear the stories of the genocide of Rwanda from its survivors.  A book that not only covers the horrible events, but the causes, the history of Hutus and Tutsis and the enmity that has been between them for hundreds of years.  This is a book I have read several times and it has always touched my heart, especially when I have seen the results of the time for    myself.

The Rwanda Crisis : History of a Genocide   This book is written by a French Historian by the name of Gerard Prunier.  The book however was written in English.  Here you will find the background in History for the 1994 genocide.  Here you will also see the involvement of France and the lack of involvement of the UN and USA.  A complete and scholarly work that gives the reader a deeper understanding as to the root causes, not just tribal hatred, but political power.

Facing Mount Kenya  The first president of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta wrote this excellent book.  Kenyatta was a Kikuyu and his worldview was shaped through his tribal upbringing.  Here one finds the difference between the relational African way and the task orientated western way.  The book gives a rare look into African life and thought.  Enjoyable and easy to read.

Petals of Blood  This powerful novel caused the author Ngugi Wa Thiongo some problems with the government of Kenya.  In it he addresses the continuation of colonization and corruption that keeps the average African in bondage even today.  The characters of the book jump out of the pages and keep the reader captive until the last page.  A book, I really enjoyed.

Abyssinian Chronicles  Moses Isegawa writes this novel filled with daily life in Uganda over a period of years.  You travel from the sleepy village to the bustling city of Kampala and meet all the people inbetween.  This is another book that makes the African struggle real to the reader.  I just finished it recently and enjoyed it very much.

The White Nile written by Alan Moorehead, author also of the Blue Nile.  What can one say, but history written like a novel.  Enjoyable, informative, given you the background to countries that border the Nile today.  A must read, and don't forget the Blue Nile one also.

The Blue Nile  Here is the Blue Nile Book, written by the same author in the same manner.  Two delightful books that I enjoy reading on a rainy day off in the Northwest of the USA, reminding me of the days I sat on the banks of the River Nile in Uganda.
