Gorilla Groups for Gorilla Tracking:

Buhoma Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Mubare Group:  The Mubare group (M-Group) was the first group to be habituated for gorilla tracking for tourists-the habituation began in 1991 and the group received its first visitors tracking them in 1993.  The group is named after the Mubare Hills where the group was found.

Habinyanja Group: The Habinyanja Group was habituated for gorilla tracking in 1997 and opened for tourists in 1999- A very large group at the beginning, but had a family split out of which the Rushegura Group was birthed.  Both groups come across one another at times - but co-exist rather peacefully.

Rushegura Group:  The Rushegura Group was habituated for Gorilla tracking in 2000 and opened to tourists in 2002.  A large group  in the Buhoma region of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.


Ruhija Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - Home of the Bitukura Gorilla Family

Bitukura Group:   The Bitukura Group is one of the newer groups at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest- it is located and roams the forest in the Ruhija region. There is limited lodging in this region - however it is available at both moderate and up-market lodges.


Rushaga Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest  - Home of the Nshongi Group and the Mishaya Gorilla Group

Mishaya Group:  After a family feud- the Mishaya Gorilla Group Split from the largest Gorilla Group at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - the Nshongi Gorilla Group - both still live in the Rushaga  area of South Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.

Nshongi Group:  This is the largest habituated gorilla group in Uganda - there are 25 members , when they were first released for visitors from Habituation there were 25, 10 left in a family split and another family was  born - the Mishaya Group.


Nkuringo Area of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest - one of the more physically demanding but rewarding areas of the forest for Gorilla Tracking - Home of the Nkuringo Gorilla Group

Nkuringo Group:   The lodging facilities at Nkuringo - the view alone is worth the price of the gorilla permits- this is one of the toughest trek's in Uganda - but certainly worthwhile- you will find it most rewarding.  The Group has 19 family members and they are a favorite of many who has tracked more than one group.

 Nyakagezi  Group:  Mgahinga Gorilla Park is simply stunning- here you can combing Gorilla Tracking of the Nyakagezi Gorilla Family with Volcano Climbing, Golden Monkey Tracking, Birding, and take the famous Batwa Trail and see the forest through the eyes of its original inhabitants.
