Day
One: Enjoy your breakfast
at your hotel in Kampala or Entebbe or we will pick you up at
the airport and check in at a nearby hotel of your choice, up-market,
moderate or budget and we will begin our 7 day Uganda Birding
Safari in the Pearl of Africa.
We begin
at Entebbe Botanical Gardens. You will love the beauty
of the Gardens with trees, plants, flowers from all over Uganda,
even medicinal plants in abundance. Your guide will know
the plants, trees, birds that are to be found there.
Entebbe
Botanical Garden will seem as you are in a jungle, at others
walking across manicured lawns, the Gardens are filled with
variety and speaking of variety
let us look at some of the birds you will find there such as
Verreaux’s Eagle Owls, Jackson’s golden backed weaver, Red Chested
Sunbirds, Vieillot’s Black Weaver, African Open Billed Stork,
Hamerkop, Black Headed Herons, Kingfishers,Long Tailed Cormorant
and many more. Don't forget the butterflies you will find there.
We take
a lunch break and check in at your hotel, up-market and moderate
will be along the waterfront of Lake Victoria which is the
second largest lake in the world, the largest in Africa and
even at lunch you will see more birds.
After
lunch it is off to Lutembe Beach, a short distance away for
more birdinglBlack Herons, Terns,
Gulls. Then back to your hotel. A full day to say the
least.
Dinner
and rest at your hotel in the Entebbe area.
Day
Two: We take an hour
ride over to Mabamba Swamps and wetlands in search of the elusive
Shoebill stork. We take some refreshments along, including
a packed lunch since we will be spending morning at Mabamba.
We will find birds like grey headed gull, the elusive
shoe bill stork, white winged terns, Yellow Billed Egret, Madagascar
Bee-Eater, Long Toed Plover, Saddle-Billed Stork, Malachite
Kingfisher, African Jacana, Swamp Flycatcher, African Water
Rail, Common Moorhen, African Purple Swamphen, Lesser Jacana,
African Pygmy Goose, White-faced Whistling-Duck, Blue-breasted
Bee-eater, Squacco Heron, Goliath Heron, Winding Cisticola and
Black Crake.
We move
on toward Lake Mburo and along the way will spot some more birds.
At Lake Mburo you have the choice of Mihingo Lodge up-market,
or at the Rwonyo Rest Camp Bandas which are budget accommodations.
At Lake
Mburo which is a park where the Tanzanian savannah spills over
into Kenya and where within the park there are five lakes, acacia
trees allowing you to find a diverse range of birds in different
habitats. It is also only one of the two National Parks
in Uganda where you will find Zebras. In the swamps you can
also find the rare Situnga Antelope, in the savannah you will
find eland, buffaloes, warthogs, a variety of antelopes, and
when it comes to birds almost one third of the species found
in Uganda are waiting to be discovered here by you. Birds
such as African Fin Foot, Bush Shrike, Brown-Chested Plover,
Red-Faced Barbet, Red, Black and Yellow Papyrus Gonalek,
Southern Ground Hornbill, Papyrus Yellow Warbler, Yellow Billed
Oxpecker, Black Collard Barbet.
We take
a late afternoon game drive going through a variety of habitats,
you will find Brown-Chested Lapwing, Lilac-breasted Roller,
Carmine Bee-eaters, Black-bellied Bustard, Helmeted Guinea fowl,
Handsome Francolin, Rufous-naped Lark, Vultures, Eagles, Kites.
You will also find Buffaloes, Zebras, Eland, many kinds of antelopes,
an occasional leopard, hippos along the lakeshore and of course
all kinds of birds.
As we
return for your lodging you can have a leisurely dinner and
enjoy the setting of the wilderness where even while you eat
you can observe wildlife and birds, a beautiful sunset and in
the up-market lodging a swim.
Day
3: Early morning breakfast and a walk in search of
the birds of Lake Mburo Park and other lakes as we walk along
the shores and swamps.
After a delightful lunch we are off for
a boat ride around the edge of the lake discovering the various
birds around the lake. The lake is actually connected
to a cluster of 14 lakes which extends beyond the park and has
been declared protected wetlands.
The boat will move slowly around the lake
giving you ample time to find various water birds, the Shoebill
amongst them, also the African Fish Eagle, Marabou Stork,
Pied Kingfisher, different kinds of Egrets and Herons.
Besides you will see Hippos, Crocodiles, Buffaloes coming to
water, waterbuck and Bushbuck. If you look into the thickets
surrounding the lake you will find other birds such as Ross's
Turaco and Narina Trogon. The African Finfoot can also
be found here. You will have a delightful afternoon of
discovery.
Dinner and rest at Lodging
Day 4: After breakfast we
depart for the Mweya Peninsula of Queen Elizabeth National Park
there we check in to our Lodging. Up-Market will be Mweya
and budget the Institute of Ecology. Lunch at your facility,
birds will actually join you as you have lunch at Mweya overlooking
the Kazinga Channel.
Then it is off to Kazinga channel for
a 3 hour launch trip, a multitude of birds along the channel,
including wildlife. This is always a highlight to a Queen
Elizabeth Park Safari. Most likely you have never seen such
a multitude of birds in your life. Birds such as African
Skimmer, Striated Heron, African Spoonbill, Water Thick-knee,
Three-banded Plover, Marsh, Green, Wood and Common Sandpiper,
Gray-headed Gull, Plain Martin, Lesser Swamp-Warbler and Yellow-billed
Oxpecker and many others.
Return to
the lodge for dinner and a good night's rest.
Day 5:
Enjoy a morning breakfast and off to Maragambo Forest for
birding. Lots of monkeys along the trails, one might even spot
a chimpanzee or leopard.
We will also
visit the famous bat cave with its python in residence and you
might see Palm Nut Vultur. There are several walk available
and depending on your stamina we can spend most of the day here
taking different walks and even if you took the same loop over
and over, each time you would spot different birds. Three
of forest trails afford prime birding seeing such rare birds
as Scaly-Breasted Illaopsis, Snowy-headed Robin-Chat and Chestnut
Wattle-Eye, Dark Capped Yellow Warbler, Fawn Breasted Waxbill,
Black Headed Batis, Brubru and Sulphur Breasted Bush Shrike
and many others. There is also an abundance of butterflies found
here.
We return
to the lodging and enjoy the late afternoon at Mweya Lodge,
enjoying the birds found here and maybe a dip into the pool,
a cold drink, even a nap.
Time permitting,
depending on how long we took at Maragambo Forest we can take
a walk to the bird hide and spot lots of birds including Cormorants,
Goliath Herous, Sacred Ibis and fish Eagles. Back to the
Lodge for a restful evening and dinner and a good night's sleep
Dinner at
the lodging of your choice and rest.
Day 6:
Breakfast and w are off for the Kyambura Gorge and Kyambura
Wildlife Reserve. This is your opportunity who see Chimpanzees
up close. Here they have been habituated which simply
means that they are accustomed to humans. There you can
also find Black and White Colobus, Vervet Monkeys, and Olive
Baboons. If you want to include the Chimpanzees in your
safari, let us know that you want to add it on, since there
are permits that need to be purchased. Chimpanzee tracking
(trekking) is at 8 am daily.
The gorge
is a forest that is surrounded by the QEP savannah and you will
find Black Bee Eaters and the Blue Breasted Kingfisher, Black
and African Black Emerald Cuckoos, Speckled Tinker bird, green
Hylia, White-spotted Fluftail , and lots of others.
There are
also crater lakes near at the Kyambura Wildlife Reserve and
a visit to Flamingo Lake, where we also will see
the little Grebe and many Ducks along the way and of course
you will countless of other birds.
We return
to Mweya Peninsula in the afternoon for lunch.
In the late
afternoon we are off for evening game drive, your first one
at Queen Elizabeth Park. Not only will see you be sighting
many birds but lions, elephants, buffalo, scenic wonders, savannah,
lakes and hopefully as you return back to the Lodge a great
sunset. We will be taking the Kasenyi track and then move
on to the Kikorongo Lake area where you can find Rupell's Griffon
Vulture, Martial Eagle, Weavers, Common Squacco Heron, Glossy
and Sacred Ibises to name a few, many more to be found. In the
Kikorongo Swamp area is a good chance to see the Shoebill Stork.
Day 7:
Morning breakfast and check out, depart for Kampala with
lunch at Masaka, Lakeview Hotel...and a stop at the equator,
returning for dinner at Kampala.
